Saturday NanoDays

Saturday, March 29, 2014
From 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Celebrates the amazing science behind the Teeny-Tiny
All day at ECHO, Saturday, March 29

ECHO once again partners with the UVM Society of Physics Students to present NanoDays as part of a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering.

Witness a variety of nano science phenomena and learn about this fascinating science with the help and encouragement of enthusiastic UVM students. Explore capillary action (think “wicking”) and non-Newtonian fluids, investigate new nano products and materials as well as use electricity to make a nickel coin look like a penny. There is also an opportunity to imagine what society might be like if you could wear an invisibility cloak!

There will be an example of the world’s lightest solid material (an aerogel), a space shuttle tile, and a commercial example of a non-Newtonian shear thickening polymer called D3O used for impact protection. There will also be displays on magnetic memory, piezoelectric materials, as well as memory metal.

NanoDays is organized by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net), and takes place nationally from March 29 - April 6, 2014. This community-based event is the largest public outreach effort in nanoscale informal science education and involves science museums, research centers, and universities from Puerto Rico to Alaska, and everywhere in between.
