FeBREWary: The Science of Beer

Thursday, February 9, 2012
From 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

An ECHO After Dark evening on the topic of beer. A lot of science goes into creating a recipe that yields the best flavor of beer for the variety of palates needing to be satisfied. This evening will turn a neophyte beer drinker into a near-master brewer, or at the very least teach us to appreciate the nuances of a good malt beverage.

From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., guests will enjoy three presentations while sipping delicious world-class beer, poured at three stations representing "color": blond, amber and dark. A total of twelve different craft beers will be available for these tastings.

The presenters are Malcolm Purinton, Ph. D. candidate, in the History of Beer, Northeastern University; Dwight Matthews, Ph. D., Professor of Chemistry, and Chair of the Department at the University of Vermont, focusing on beer Chemistry; Anne Whyte, owner of Vermont Home Brew Supply, talking about home brew and adding aroma.

Beers are as follows (from USA, Belgium and Germany):

Blonde Beers: Ommegang Belgian Pale Ale, Victory Prima Pilsner, Berkshire Brewing Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale, Saison Dupont Farmhouse Ale, Ayinger Alt Dunkel,Victory Prima Pilsner

Red Beers: St Rogue Red Ale, Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye, Liefmans Cuvee Brut, Ayinger Marzen, Smuttynose Maibock

Dark Beers: Allagash Black-Belgian Stout, Founders Porter, Stone Sublimely Self Righteous
Schlenkera Helles, Clown Shoes Blacorn Unidragon Imperial Stout

Beer Games! There will also be classic pub games set up throughout ECHO for folks to enjoy.

Price: $20 non members/$15 ECHO members. Price includes five beer tastings along with collectible ECHO After Dark tasting glass. Additional tastings can be purchased for $1 each.

Food will be available for purchase from Sugarsnap!
