FeBREWary: The Science of German Beers

An ECHO AfterDark evening on the topic of German beer! Forget Oktoberfest! Join us as we head into the science, flavor, and history of a wonderfully rich beer producing region of the world. What do all those German words on the beer label mean? Can I make German style beer at home? Is the chemistry of German-style brewing different from the English tradition? This evening will turn a neophyte beer drinker into a near-master brewer, or at the very least teach us to appreciate the nuances of a good German beverage.
From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., guests will enjoy three presentations while sipping delicious world-class beer, poured at a number of stations representing different German beer-producing regions. Many different German beers, as well as some boutique American beer brewed in the German tradition, will be available for these tastings.
With the theme of German beers, we’ll have three presenters for the evening: Malcolm Purinton, Ph. D. candidate, Northeastern University, will talk about the History of German beers and how regions influence these beers; Dwight Matthews, Ph. D., Professor of Chemistry, and Chair of the Department at the University of Vermont, focusing on what makes German beer German; Anne Whyte, owner of Vermont Home Brew Supply, will be sharing tips about home brewing lagers (it’s not as hard as it seems).

Price: $20 non members/$15 ECHO members. Price includes five beer tastings along with collectible ECHO AfterDark tasting glass. Additional tastings can be purchased for $1 each.

Special FeBREWary event: We’ll have a selection of specialty German beers for you to taste from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Discover new flavors and find out how the beers garner their characters as discussed by Anne Whyte, judge and owner of Vermont HomeBrew Supply. These beers will be specially imported by G.housen. Outside of Germany, you may not see them in our local stores. Complimentary hors d’oeuvre platters. Limited to 46 people. $40 per ticket.
