MANAGER OF VOICES FOR THE LAKE

Summary:
Voices for the Lake is a two-year project supported by the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) whose goal is to improve the health of Lake Champlain. Through public discussion, social technologies, and education, Voices for the Lake will bring people together to share their perspectives and drive opportunities for engaging the public in environmental stewardship of the Lake Champlain Basin.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes, this person will share supervision of:

  • Coordinator for Lifelong Learning: Responsible for integrating wiki’s, blogs and other social technologies into ECHO’s educational programs, website and exhibits.  (Other duties supervised by the Director of Education.)
  • Coordinator for Information Technology: Manage the technological aspects of ECHO’s emerging website, video capture, and on-site high-tech interactive exhibits including development of the infrastructure, training, and interface requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
  1. Coordinate all aspects of the Voices for the Lake initiative as outlined in the proposal to the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences.
  2. Engage ECHO staff in identifying potentially valuable topics, themes and applications to support onsite educational programs and exhibits.
  3. Identify populations needed to capture “voices” representing a broad array of educational, faith-based, environmental, historical, recreational and governmental organizations.
  4. Understand and utilize video capture technology and techniques for drawing out stories from the public.
  5. Using ECHO’s strong ties to public libraries, establish regional outreach sessions coordinated with Vermont and New York libraries as a neutral venue to host the story-capture sessions with the public.
  6. Recruit volunteers to assist with story-capture sessions.
  7. Maintain a network and database of engaged citizens and environmental groups participating in the project.
  8. Continually monitor and evaluate project impacts.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s/Masters Degree in Biology/Ecology or Science Education.
  • Understanding of the broad array of the issues impacting freshwater aquatic ecosystems and the organizations working to improve them.
  • Experience in cultivating and growing partnerships.
  • Experience using social technologies; understanding and interest in emerging media and web social networking.
  • Strong public speaking, supervisory and facilitation skills.

Essential Job Skills and Abilities:

  • Build partnerships, organize events and facilitate group discussion.
  • Manage a budget and oversee part time staff functions related to the project.
  • Review the value of cutting-edge museum industry programs and audience development techniques especially as related to social technologies.
  • Strong writing skills and presentation skills using PowerPoint and video.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where being a creative team player is essential.

Work is performed is both offsite and in a regular office setting. The schedule will be established by the Manager as they schedule potential weekend and evening sessions to facilitate the story-capture process and onsite supervision of their Voices for the Lake team.

PART-TIME CUSTODIAN (16 hours/week)

Reports To: Director of Animal Care and Facilities
Schedule: 4:30 am to 1:00 pm; two days/week (Saturdays and Sundays)
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Date Last Approved: July, 2008
Hourly Rate: $12.14 per hour

Job Overview:
The Custodian is an experienced team player who will provide custodial services throughout all guest and staff areas in ECHO. The Custodian reports to the Director of Animal Care and Facilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Daily cleaning of guest, staff and service areas including dusting, mopping, sweeping, scrubbing, window cleaning, trash removal, etc. after hours and when guests are in ECHO.
  • Periodic deep cleaning utilizing carpet extractor and floor burnisher.
  • Collect and transfer trash/recyclables to appropriate bulk storage or disposal containers.
  • Maintain/stock paper products, solvents, cleansers, hand cleaners, etc. as needed.
  • Periodic cleaning, sweeping, raking, etc. of exterior walkways, planter beds, parking lot and Hoehl Park; may assist in snow removal, deicing, on sidewalks.
  • Respond to requests for emergency custodial needs in a timely manner.

Essential Job Skills and Abilities:

  • Sufficient relevant experience that demonstrates understanding of and ability to provide excellent custodial services.
  • Physical ability to perform strenuous work and lift and/or move at least 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee sometimes works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee may work in high, precarious places and be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
