Qualifications:
- Must love Lake Champlain
- Be willing to volunteer at least 8 hours per month
- Must be at least 15 years old
- Willing to attend all trainings/orientations

Education
EXHIBIT INTERPRETER (15 years and older)

Responsible to: Education Department
Area of Responsibility: Help the public learn about over 70 species of animals and the fascinating culture and
history of the Lake Champlain Basin in the only aquarium in
Vermont! Develop skills in working with people of all ages
as you help interpret our exhibit galleries, discovery
spaces and live animals. Volunteers help bring the exhibits
alive for the visitors, interpret our marine invertebrates
in our Champlain Sea Tide Pool and occasionally present
live animal demonstrations.
Length of Commitment: Three months; at least two four hour
shifts/month
Qualifications: Volunteers must enjoy working with
visitors of all ages, be excited about learning and have an
interest in sharing their enthusiasm with others. They must
also enjoy working with a close team of volunteers, youth
and staff and have an outgoing and cheerful demeanor.
Experience in working with children and families a
plus.
LAKE CHAMPLAIN RESOURCE ROOM ASSISTANTS (18 years and older)
Responsible To: Lake Champlain Basin Program
Resource Room Staff
Area of Responsibility: The Lake Champlain Resource
Room is an important link between the activities and
exhibits within ECHO and opportunities throughout the
Basin. Operated by the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP)
in coordination with ECHO, the Resource Room provides a
Lake library, childrens' books and activities, exhibits,
and three computer kiosks. Helping the public access
stewardship opportunities on the Lake is also an important
focus of the room. Please visit www.lcbp.org to learn more

Length of Commitment: Three months; at least two
shifts/month
Qualifications: Volunteers must enjoy working with
visitors of all ages, be excited about learning and have an
interest in sharing their enthusiasm with others. An
interest in Lake Champlain issues and stewardship is
important as well. Opportunities within the Resource Room
include helping the public access Lake information, helping
children with hands-on activities, filing and cataloging
information, and helping the public with basic computer
use, such as the using the internet. They must also enjoy
working with a close team of volunteers, youth and
staff.

Animal Care
ANIMAL CARE ASSISTANT (16 years and older)
Responsible to: Director of Facilities and Exhibits
Area of Responsibility: ECHO is home to over 70 species of animals, including fish, reptiles, amphibians
and invertebrates. Help is needed with the day to day care,
feeding and maintenance of the animals and their
enclosures. Volunteers in this position also interact with
the public while doing daily animal feedings.
Length of Commitment: Three months; 1 shift/week
Qualifications: Persons applying should not be
afraid to get their hands wet or dirty! This is an active
job; volunteers should be in good physical health and be
able to lift 20-40 pounds. Experience with animals and/or
aquariums preferred but not necessary. We can work with
snake phobics!
Comments: Receive in depth training before working
independently feeding, weighing and caring for animals and
their habitats.

Events
EVENING FUNCTION HOST/HOSTESS (18 years and older)
Responsible to: Events Manager
Area of Responsibility: Assist with the preparation
for and implementation of private events during the
evenings. Responsibilities could include greeting and
welcoming guests, interpreting exhibits, or prep and
clean-up help.
Length of Commitment: 6 events over a one year time
period. Must be able to work nights and weekends.
Qualifications: Ability to work well with the public and feel comfortable
talking about the various exhibits.

Mascot
ECHO MASCOT/MASCOT HELPER (16 years and older)
Responsible to: Marketing Manager
Area of Responsibility: Help promote ECHO during
parades, community events and promotions such as Kids Day,
Chew-Chew Festival and other family events in Vermont.
Length of Commitment: Flexible-one time events and
on-going activities
Qualifications: Must be 5’7” or above
for mascot. Should enjoy waving, shaking hands and
delighting people of all ages! Mascot helper should have an
outgoing, fun-loving personality and be able to interact
with large crowds of NEWTon fans! Reliable transportation
is a plus.
