ANIMAL CARE
AND CONSERVATION

The diverse animal collection on exhibit at ECHO includes more than 40 species — and almost 500 specimens of fish, reptiles, and amphibians — either currently or once native to the Lake Champlain Basin. Plus: 13 species and more than 60 specimens of exotic frogs found throughout the world.

Animal Care Staff work hard to keep our aquatic habitats clean for all of our animal ambassadors. These animal ambassadors star in daily animal demonstrations and feedings so that ECHO guests can get up-close-and-personal. Meet and speak with Animal CareThese Map Turtles are two of more than 100 turtles over-wintered at ECHO. Staff, who will describe the care given to the animals at ECHO, the fascinating and unique features of each species, their relationship with the environment, and the stewardship actions we all can implement to maintain or improve the conditions in the Lake Champlain Basin.

ECHO's Animal Care Department assists the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department by over-wintering hatchling turtles rescued each fall. These neonates are exhibited in the Animal Care Lab on the top floor of ECHO and are often the subject of "behind-the-scenes" tours.
