ECHO STAKEHOLDERS

ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain is not only a world-class aquarium and science center, but a key partner in the global effort to promote healthy lakes and freshwater systems. Three of our major partners are the Lake Champlain Basin Program, The University of Vermont's Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory, Saint Michael's College and LAKENET.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN BASIN PROGRAM

The Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) is a federal, state and local initiative to restore and protect Lake Champlain and its surrounding watershed for future generations.

LCBP's three priorities to protect and restore ecological and cultural resources of the Basin while maintaining a vital economy for the region are:

  • Reduce phosphorus in priority sub basins of the Lake
  • Prevent and control persistent toxic contaminants
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive program to manage nuisance nonnative aquatic species

UVM RUBENSTEIN ECOSYSTEM SCIENCE LABORATORY

The Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory is a lakefront extension of the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont (UVM). The laboratory is also used by Saint Michael's College in a partnership with UVM. It houses state-of-the-art research facilities, including laboratories for the study of contaminants, water and sediment quality, and aquatic biota including fish, invertebrates and algae. The laboratory provides researchers with the tools necessary to investigate and understand the ecosystem processes that determine ecological health and influence the quality of life for the human community in the Basin. The UVM research vessel Melosira is docked adjacent to the facility, providing access for research and teaching on Lake Champlain. The facility also provides a teaching laboratory for use by UVM, Saint Michael's College, and ECHO .
