The Lake Champlain Navy Memorial will be a premier historical experience for residents of the Lake Champlain basin, tourists, active duty and retired military personnel and visitors of all ages. It is estimated that well over 175,000 visitors a year will visit the Memorial. It will not only stand in honor of all the men and women who have served and continue to serve, but will educate thousands about the history of the Lake.

THE LONE SAILOR

To the casual visitor or family exploring Burlington, Vermont’s scenic waterfront
or sailing the lake, a silent figure comes into view.

The Lone Sailor, a bronze sculpture, is the centerpiece of the Lake Champlain Navy Memorial. The United States Navy Memorial Foundation granted the right to its use on the shores of Lake Champlain. The Foundation, much taken with the planned location and in recognition of the great historical importance of naval actions on Lake Champlain, granted approval in 1998. Thus, not only was Burlington, Vermont the second location approved outside of Washington, at the time it was the only civilian location approved.

The statue itself is made of bronze and approximately 71/2 feet tall and weighs an estimated one thousand pounds. It is placed in the center of a compass rose made entirely of Vermont granite. Behind the statue are six granite slants placed in a semicircle. Narrative descriptions of critical naval actions and those Vermonters who have changed the
course of history are etched on each slant.
