SHAW’S “REUSABLE POLAR BEAR BAGS” TO BENEFIT ECHO
Vermont Campaign Runs January 2 through February, 28, 2009
BURLINGTON, Vt. – As part of a New England-wide campaign,
Shaw’s Supermarkets has selected ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science
Center to be the representative Vermont environmental attraction
to receive a portion of the proceeds from their popular Reusable
Polar Bear Bags, from January 2 through February 28, 2009.
For every $1.50 Reusable Polar Bear Bag purchased at a
Vermont Shaw’s, 10 cents will be donated to ECHO — whose mission
is to inspire the stewardship of the Lake Champlain Basin. And,
as an incentive to visit ECHO, an accompanying, special discount
coupon will offer $2.00 off admission for every person in a
party.
“We want to encourage more shoppers to buy and use their
reusable bags, which also will benefit ECHO,” said Shaw’s
President Larry Wahlstrom. “This campaign supports our mission
of environmental stewardship.”
ECHO’s Executive Director Phelan Fretz says “Environmental
action is about the small choices we make every day — like
bringing a reusable bag to the grocery store. We are very
grateful to Shaw’s for communicating this fundamental
stewardship message through their Reusable Polar Bear Bags
campaign, and for choosing ECHO as the beneficiary of the
initiative in Vermont.”
The campaign will be launched with an event at the South
Burlington Shaw’s on Saturday, January 10 between 10 a.m. – 2
p.m., featuring announcements by dignitaries from Shaw’s
Supermarkets, Inc. and ECHO; an appearance by ECHO’s mascot,
NEWTon; eco-activities at an ECHO booth; and free balloons and
cookies.
The winter Reusable Polar Bear Bags campaign will benefit
environmental attractions throughout New England, including:
Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut; Maine Audubon Society; New
England Aquarium in Massachusetts; Seacoast Science Center in
New Hampshire; Roger Williams Zoo in Rhode Island; and ECHO Lake
Aquarium and Science Center, at the Leahy Center for Lake
Champlain, in Vermont. For further information, go to
echovermont.org or call 1-877-ECHOFUN.
ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center is located at the
Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, on Vermont’s Burlington
Waterfront. ECHO features 70 live species, over 100 interactive
experiences, seasonal changing exhibits and events — all
exploring the Ecology, Culture, History, and Opportunity for
stewardship of the Lake Champlain Basin. The 2.2 acre Leahy
Center environmental campus is also highlighted by the Lake
Champlain Basin Program Resource Room, UVM’s Rubenstein
Ecosystem Science Laboratory, Lake Champlain Navy Memorial,
ECHO’s Eclectic Gift Shop, and green-themed Think! Café. Open
year-round, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve &
Day. Admission is $7-$9.50; children under 3 and K-12 classroom
teachers with credential ID are free. For more information visit
